WILL OF
SAVAGE BARRELL 1690
IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN
I Savage Barrell of Istleworth in the county of Middx being weake of body
but of sound and perfect mind and memory praise be given to the almighty
God for the same knowing the uncertainty of this life and desirous to settle
things in order hereby to prevent any rontention that might afterwise arise
after my decease doe make this my last will and testament in manner and
forme following viz, Ffirst and principally i resigne my soule unto the
mercifull of God my creator hopeing through the merritts of my blessed
saviour to obtaine remission of all my sins and my body to the earth from
where it was taken to be decently buryed in such christian manner as to
my executix hereinafter named shall be thought write and convenient and
as touching such loorldly estate as the lord in his infinite mercy hath
sent me my will and desire is that the same shall be employed and disposed
of as followeth suprimis I doe hereby revoke frustrate make void all former
wills by me made and declare and appoint these presents to be my last will
and testament in manner and forme following viz, Item I give and devise
unto my grandsonne John Barrell all and singuler my lands and tenements
whatsoever in the parish of Bradwell in the county of Essex with their
and evory of their rights members and appurtenaures thereunto belonging
and alsoe all my copyhold lands with the appurtenaures seituate in the
parish of lower Layton in the said county of Essex called by the name of
Eleaven anne Close (be the same more or lesse) the same being lately lett
unto Thomas Nasty but now lett unto Samuel Clarke of London Esq; and alsoe
all that my messuage or tenement seituate in St Michaels lane in the parish
of St Michaels Crooked Lane London called or knowne by the name of the
Boars Head assigned unto me by our John Cully and now lett unto our William
Bright together with the lease and coery the appurtenaures and terme of
yeares yett to come and unexpired to have and to hold the said lands and
tenements in the parish of Bradwell and Laiton aforesaid and alsoe the
said messuage or temement in Crooked Lane as aforesaid with every the rights
members and appurtenaures to every of them belonging or in any wise appertaining
unto my said grandsonne John Barrell for and during the terme of his naturall
life and after his decease i give and devise every the said premisses with
their and every of their appurtenaures unto his heire male lawfully to
be begotten but for want of such issue i give and devise the said premisses
with their and every of their appurtenaures unto my grandsonne William
Barrell for and during the terme of his naturall life and after his decease
i give and devise the same premisses with every their appurtenaures unto
his heire male lawfully to be begotten but for want of such issue i give
and devise and my will and meaning is that all the aforesaid lands tenements
and premisses with every their appurtenaures shall be equally devided amongst
all the children of my three grandchildren viz, John, William, and Elizabeth
to have and to hold the same unto them and theire heires forever ffurthermore
i give unto my said grandsonne John Barrell my silver guilt bowle with
a cover thertto belonging and two pictures the one of myself the other
of my wife and my second best bedd with the furniture and appurtenaures
whatsoever belonging to it and alsoe the sume of one hundred and fifty
pounds of lawfull money of England the said money the silver guilt bowle
and the pictures to be delivered and paid unto him on the foure and twentieth
day of April one thousand six hundred ninety and one and the bedding i
leave to the discretion of my executrix to be delivered to him when soevereth
convenient before the said time. Item I give and devise all my freeholds
and copyhold lands and tenements with their appurtenaures seituate lying
and being in the several parishes of Eastwood and Prittlewell in the county
of Essex aforesaid and also all that my messuage or tenement seituate in
Ffanchurch street in London that since the dreadfull fire was erected and
built upon a certaine peece of ground devised and lett unto me by the Mayor
and comonalty and citizens of London by endenture hearing date the fourteenth
day of Aprill one thousand six hundred sixty eight for the terme of eighty
and our years together with the lease and terme of yeares to come and unexpired
unto my grandsonne William Barrell for and during the terme of his naturall
life and after his decease i give and devise the said estate and copyhold
lands and tenements and the messuage with the terme of years to come and
every the premisses with their and every their appurtenaures unto heire
male lawfully to be begotten but for want of such issue i give and devise
the saime with every the appurtenaures unto my grandsonne John Barrell
for and during the terme of his naturall life and after his decease i give
and devise the said premisses with the appurtenaures unto his hiere male
lawfully to be begotten but for want of such issue i give and devise the
said premisse with every the appurtenaures unto all the children of my
said three grandchildren to be equally devided amongst them to have and
to hold to them and their heires forever alsoe i give and bequeath unto
my said gradsonne William Barrell the best piece of silver plate that is
myn at the time of my death and not herein bequeathed and the third best
bedd with the furniture and appurtenaures that shall be remaining at the
time of my decease and not hearin before bequethed and alsoe the sum of
fouer hundred pounds of lawfull money of England to be paid him with the
rents and profits of the said estate and the said peice of plate and the
things parte of my goods as aforesaid delivered unto him all at one time
which i ordaine to be paid and done on the twentieth day of March one thousand
six hundred ninety and five alsoe i give and devise unto my said grandsonne
William Barrell all that my now dwelling house and premisses with the appurtenaures
in Istleworth aforesaid on this codition that his mother my executrix herinafter
named shall enjoy the use and benefit thereof for and during the time and
terme that shee remaines the widow of my said sonne John Barrell shee keeping
the said premisses in sufficient repaire during the said terme at her owne
proper costs and charges. Item I give and bequeath unto my grandaughter
Elizabeth Petty my best goods and those greene curtaines and needleworke
pattens two needleworke chairs two needleworke stooles and needleworke
stoolecases (being the same that were given my wife by her mother in law)
to be kept in custody of my executrix until in her discretion (and with
the aplicabacon? of my overseers herin named they shall see meet to deliver
the same for the benefit and use of her the said Elizabeth and her childs.
And my will and desire further is that either of my said grandchildren
dye before the time that they recieve their said legacies of money plate
bedding XR that then their said legacie or legacies shall be equally devided
between the survivors of them if but one survive they to enjoy both the
others legacies to be paid and delivered to the said survivor or suvivors
at the respective time it would have become due unto the deceased. Item
I give and bequeath unto my daughter in law Ruth Barrell late wife of my
sonne John Barrell gent deseased whom i make and ordaine full and sole
executrix of this my last will and testament all the rest and residue of
my estate goods implements of household stuff money plate rings bedding
lyinen silver woollen debts rents XR and all and every other thing and
things whatsoever that may be properly be called mine and not herin before
bequethed after my funerall costs and charges are one defrayed and paid
on this condition, viz, To enjoy the use and benefit thereof during all
the time and terme that she remaines the widow of my said sonne John Barrell
but if she happen to marry again or at the time of her death which first
happens my will and desire is that what estate soever i left her as my
executrix by virtue of this will at the time of my decease over and above
what is herin already bequeathed unto my said three grandchildren John
William and Elizabeth the same to be equally devided amongst my said three
grandchildren or the survivors or the survivor of them. Lastly i ordaine
and appoint my loving friends Tho Morris of London Esq; and Tho Delly of
Onger in the county of Essex gent and the and the survivor of them to be
overseers or overseer of this my last will and testament trusting and wholly
relying on their fidelity and take to see this my will and desire as in
these presents menrones? fulfills according to the true intent construction
and plaine meaning hereof and i bequeath to each of them a guiney to buy
them rings. In witnesse whereof i have hereunto sett my hand and seale
the sixteenth day of August one thousand six hundred and ninety 1690. Savage
